Designers need to be aware of the green design aesthetic that’s in demand across the home, according to a new report from the Institute for Green Design.
“It’s really about designing with a purpose,” says Ian Kessel, a senior research fellow at the institute and the lead author of the report.
“If you don’t think about what you’re doing, what your purpose is, then you’re not going to be successful.”
A lot of designers seem to be focused on the green aesthetic rather than the practical, but this can be a big problem if you want to get a green project off the ground.
“When you design for green design, you’re also going to have to make sure you’re thinking about what’s in the real world,” Kessel says.
“What are the challenges that might exist if the design doesn’t work?
What are the people who need to live in the environment that you’re trying to address?”
If your design needs to be green, you’ll need to start thinking about sustainability, climate change, and social justice issues, the report notes.
“The Green Design Project is all about thinking about how design can help people live in a green world,” says Kessel.
He adds that there’s no set solution to these issues, and that there are lots of ways to design with a green aesthetic.
“You need to think about how the design can affect the environment,” Kethers says.
It’s also important to understand what your users will want.
“This is the big thing that you have to think carefully about,” Kohn says.
Designers should make sure they are thinking about the green-world perspective, and don’t just be focused in a “green world.”
This can be done through incorporating sustainable design elements into their designs, Kessel notes.
He says there’s also a difference between green design that looks good, and the green world aesthetic that is really cool.
“We’re always looking for green.
The question is how you want that to look,” Kohler says.
This may be why designers often end up looking at green space as a substitute for green spaces, and sometimes that doesn’t feel good.
“I think this is one of the biggest challenges for designers today,” Kerman says.
Kessel adds that it’s important to have a “visionary view of your vision,” because “if you don, you can’t imagine what your vision is.”
This is a big step, but not the end of the world The Institute for the Future also recommends that designers start thinking more about the social and environmental impact of their designs.
“Designers need not look solely at green, but also at what their projects are going to achieve in the long term,” Koster says.
The institute also suggests that designers make sure that they are planning ahead for their design projects, and consider how they might change the way the design is used.
“A lot of people are going in thinking that it is a black-and-white thing,” Kertz says.
“[But] it is much more than that.
You can change the visual language of a project, change the design language of the space, and change the whole aesthetic of the project.”

“In the next five to 10 years, we’re going to see a lot of green space,” Kraft says.
But even though the Institute recommends a green mindset, Kohn warns that the green project market isn’t quite there yet.
“There’s definitely room for more designers to start taking that green approach,” Kitzinger says.
For example, designers can create a green layout design that’s both functional and visually appealing.
Kohn also suggests creating a design that is sustainable, and has a purpose.
“Think about what the sustainability is going to look like for the space,” he says.
If your home has a lot going on, it’s also better to design it with the intent to improve the environment, rather than just “greening it up.”
This could mean using a natural light-emitting diodes or LEDs in the design, or using natural-color lighting to create a natural mood or contrast to the design.
